Note: I am using the term “extremes” not “extremists” in the title of this essay. The focus is on tactics and positions. I mention select people who help illustrate the shift toward polar politics, but my goal isn’t to dismiss the concerns of anyone. We are better off when we find common ground rather than marginalize people into categories.
